Mastering whiskey stones is not for the weak of heart. You are combining glass, rock, and alcohol. Chaos and disaster could occur. But, if you stay on your toes and keep calm, success will be yours.

Whiskey stones should be prepared ahead of time and before the first time you use them.

Wash - Clean your stones. Residue could affect the taste of your whiskey. A little dish soap and a good rinsing should do the trick.

Dry - Dry your stones. Freezing a wet stone will obviously cause ice to form on the stone, possibly causing your whiskey to become slightly diluted on next use. Wet stones will also stick together and to the tin when frozen. You don't need that grief. Give your stones time to dry before replacing them in the tin.

Freeze - Freeze your stones for at least 3 to 4 hours. Much longer won't make the stones colder. They will only get as cold as your freezer. Two weeks in the freezer won't make them any colder.

Adding Stones - It works best to add stones to your glass then add whiskey (or scotch or your beverage of choice). You can add the stones after you've poured, but things get splashy. Gently add 3 or 4 stones to your glass. Gently is key. Combining stone and glass can go wrong if care is not taken. If you have not already, pour about 2 ounces of whiskey. Larger beverages will require more stones. Play with it over a few drinks. You'll figure out what works for you.

Wait - You need to wait a few minutes. I know this is not easy. The stones need time to transfer their cold. It does not happen instantly. If you add stones and immediately start drinking, nothing will happen and you'll shrug, saying whiskey stones don't work. Thermodynamics works at the pace it works. Give the stones a few minutes. A few gentle tumbler swirls will help pass the time.

Drinking - Sip your drink and enjoy the mellow chill. Do not do shots with whiskey stones because the stones will clank off your teeth. Ouch. If you sip like a professional or avid whiskey enthusiast, everything should be fine. Want colder? Add more stones.

Clean Up - The stones only work for one drink. Once your drink is finished, carefully remove the stones and go through the wash, dry, freeze steps above.
