What to Consider When Choosing a Blanket Consider whether your horse: has a thick or thin hair coat. is unclipped, partially or fully clipped. runs warm or is chilled and shivers easily. lives inside, outside or is turned out without shelter. is an easy keeper or a hard keeper, or compromised by health issues. recently transplanted from a warm geographic area to a cooler one, vice versa. To these considerations, factor in weather conditions and temperatures for the day. Always err on the side of a lower weight blanket rather than a heavier weight. If your horse becomes overheated, he can perspire inside the blanket. The moisture can then cause chills as he cools.	Turnout Blanket Weights Lightweight turnouts from some manufacturers have 100 grams of fill in the center; other manufacturers refer to their turnout sheets as lightweights. Many people rely on lightweight turnouts with 100 grams of fill for the months when the weather is just starting to cool in autumn or warm up in spring. They offer some level of warmth that turnout sheets without fill cannot provide. Some people with horses that run hot rely on lightweights with 100 grams of fill because heavier blankets are too warm for their horses. Mid-weight or medium weight turnouts have 180 to 200 grams of fill. Many horses do well with a medium or mid-weight blanket. Heavy weight turnouts typically have 300 to 440 grams of fill. They may be critical for use on a fully clipped horse and for extreme cold weather conditions. However, the warmth they provide may be too much for some horses in some conditions.	How to Size Your Horse For a Blanket A good fit in a blanket is essential for comfort and security. The blanket is placed flat and smooth with fastenings undone. Any gussets or darts would be spread flat, too. A soft fabric tape measure with inch measurements runs from front binding to back binding, and sits just at base of the neck opening To determine the size blanket your horse needs, stand him squarely on level ground. Use a soft fabric tape measure running from the center of your horse's chest (where the base of the neck meets the chest) over the point of his shoulder, to the point at which you want the blanket to end. The inch measurement you obtain translates to the blanket size you should try.	How to Check Blanket Fit Blanket the horse & close front. The best fit allows fabric at the chest to overlap & the closure to be adjusted by the middle. You want to fit a hand under the blanket around the neck & over the withers with the horse’s head raised & in a grazing position. If the opening is too small, the blanket will pull or rub on the horse. Adjust belly closures, which may vary in number or type. These straps should be adjusted. A flat hand should slide between the strap & the horse’s belly. If there is a tail strap, adjust it so there’s about a hand’s width between strap and horse. If the blanket has leg straps, pass the left strap through the horse’s hind legs & clip it to the dee ring on the left side of the blanket, do the opposite with the right strap. Adjust them so that you can fit a hand’s width between strap & inside of the horse’s leg. Stand back & look at the entire fit. The shoulders of the blanket should not be too tight or sag on the horse & the hem should not hang at or below the knee.

A stable sheet is a fitted item of horse clothing intended only to help keep your horse clean and dust free. It can be made from a number of lightweight fabrics, from cotton to nylon to polypropylene. A stable sheet can often be used to perform the role of a dress sheet for traveling to competitions. Stable Blankets

Stable blankets are made to keep horses cozy inside a barn. They’re usually quilted and come in a wide range of weights from 100 to 400 grams of fill. They’re also usually not waterproof, but many are water-repellent or moisture-resistant to guard against urine or manure stains. The use of a stable blanket allows you to replace a horse’s heavier wet outerwear with a loftier item that will keep him warm while he’s in his stall with restricted freedom of motion. The cut of a stable blanket is more fitted or contoured than the cut of a turnout blanket.

Coolers and Anti-Sweat Sheets

Protect your wet horse from chills as he dries with a horse cooler or Irish knit anti-sweat sheet. A cooler wicks moisture and offers maximum draft protection, while an anti-sweat sheet allows hot air to escape as hair dries.

Quarter Sheets

An exercise rug, sometimes called a quarter sheet or riding blanket, covers a horse’s hindquarters. Exercise rugs come in two basic types to serve different purposes. One type is made of a waterproof material designed to help keep a horse dry while riding during wet weather. The other type of exercise rug is made of either wool or synthetic fleece fabric. This cozy covering helps keep your horse’s muscles warm during cold weather workouts. It can be used throughout a ride or just for warm-ups and cool-downs to prevent muscles from getting chilled.
