Many conventional crib mattresses are made with harmful chemicals that can off-gas into your child's bedroom air. They often contain polyurethane foam, flame retardants, glues, biocides, and chemical water repellents. A certified organic crib mattress has been approved by a third party GOTS certifier to help ensure none of these things end up in your crib mattress. Consumers are choosing organic mattresses as a way to avoid unnecessary exposure to these chemicals.
At Naturepedic, every one of our crib mattresses is certified to the GOTS organic standard as well as the non-toxic MADE-SAFE and low-chemical emissions GREENGUARD standards. They are hand-made in Ohio in our own eco-facility that specializes only in organic products. This gives us complete control over quality and the purity of our supply chain. With Naturepedic, you get premium certified organic materials, quality craftsmanship, and a safe healthy design that completely eliminates polyurethane foam, vinyl/PVC, PFAS or non-waterproof fabrics with polyurethane backing, biocides, formaldehyde, flame retardant chemicals or flame barriers and more. At Naturepedic, your child's health and safety is our top priority!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
How is Naturepedic different from other mattresses that also claim to NOT have flame retardants?
Just about every crib mattress we've come across contains either flame retardants or synthetic flame barriers. When a listing says "no flame retardant chemicals," that generally means they're using a flame "barrier" instead (basically another form of flame retardants). There could also be flame retardants in the raw materials. At Naturepedic, it doesn't matter how you refer to flame retardants, we don't have any!!!
How is Naturepedic different from other mattresses labelled as "organic"?
Many companies will use organic cotton as a single raw ingredient. However, there is no point in using organic cotton if the mattress also contains formaldehyde, adhesives, water-repellant treatments, antimicrobial treatments or flame retardants. That is why Naturepedic mattresses are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS can certify individual raw materials, but they can also certify the whole mattress. Naturepedic mattresses have the higher level of certification that covers the entire mattress. That means every ingredient in the mattress has to be either organic or non-toxic to meet the standard.
Are mattresses labeled "eco" or "green" just as good?
No. "Eco" and "green" are not meaningful terms and can be used freely without definition. Many of these "eco" materials may sound good, but they are often not even "natural" and are often no better than their synthetic counterparts. As an example, "soybean" or "plant-based" foams are typically 80% or more petroleum/chemical based and are not really "made of soybeans" or plants. The only term that's actually meaningful is certified organic as there's an independent third-party who verifies the claims. Naturepedic goes beyond the minimum requirements for organic certification. In fact, we lead the industry when it comes to eliminating questionable chemicals in favor of natural, organic and non-toxic materials.
What are the other types of waterproofing and why don’t I want them?
Vinyl – short for “polyvinyl chloride” or PVC. Contains phthalate plasticizers that leach out over time. The U.S. government banned certain phthalate plasticizers due to toxicity concerns, but manufacturers keep finding ways to change the formula just enough that they fall outside the ban.
Water repellent treatments – Causes water droplets to bead up on a fabric. Aside from the chemical concerns, these just don't work well. Water will bead up initially, but as liquid remains on the surface for even 30 minutes, it will start to seep through. That means urine and other messes will ultimately absorb into the fabric and mattress and foster mold growth. Regarding toxicity, just search up PFAS waterproof treatments to see for yourself.
Polyurethane-backed fabric – This is typically a layer of polyurethane laminated to the underside of a fabric (often an organic cotton fabric!). Technically you could call this “waterproof” because the liquid will not get past the polyurethane layer depending on its formulation. However, the surface fabric is either PFAS-treated or just not waterproof, leading to stains and a difficult-to-clean situation.
“Breathable” crib mattresses – Most breathable crib mattresses are not fully waterproof or have no waterproofing at all! That means anything and everything can seep straight into the mattress. These designs can be difficult or impossible to clean. Naturepedic makes a line of organic breathable crib mattresses that are also waterproof and easy-to-clean without losing any breathable benefits. The way we achieve this is by making the breathable layer removeable and machine washable. Underneath the breathable layer is a fully functioning waterproof crib mattress that will stop any liquids from getting inside the mattress.
