The Smarthockey Story: Making Hockey Players Better
Smarthockey was started with one goal in mind - make US and Canadian hockey players better by developing products and training programs that let players train anywhere, anytime.
As former players, we trained with world-renowned hockey instructors like Dr. Yasha Smushkin, Laura Stamm, and Real Turcotte, but we always wished we had a way to practice what we learned after the camps were done.
After our playing days were over, we started running our own camp and realized that our students only got better when they were on the ice with us because they didn't have a viable way of training when they were at home.
So in 2001, we introduced the Smarthockey Training Ball so our students could work on their stickhandling, shooting and passing skills at home or before games and practices.
Apparently, we weren't the only ones that thought the balls were a good idea. In less than 12 months our balls were being sold in over 500 hundred hockey pro shops across the US, Canada, Sweden, Russia, Japan, UK and even Australia.
The Ball with "the holes in it"
The first Smarthockey Training Ball prototypes were white. They had 3 holes on each side because we didn't have the money to pay for a tool which would "pull" the pins during the molding process. We made 1000 prototypes in the first run and started selling the balls at the Hockey Stop in Columbus, OH. The balls were sold in an old Nike shoe box with an 8"x11" flyer explaining the what the ball was and how it was different from orange Street Hockey balls.
Our goal was to sell the first 1,000 prototypes, so we could pay for a tool that wouldn't leave any holes, but then a funny thing happened - people and pro shops started calling, asking if we were the ones selling "the ball with the holes in it"?
We kept the holes and the rest is history.
Our history
Smarthockey C|SAW Chassis was designed in 1997. The chassis was engineered to duplicate ice skate blade contact percentages and body ramp angles of a "rockered" ice hockey skate blade.
The chassis was licensed to Bauer Nike Hockey in 1997 and the name was changed to the TUUK Rocker Chassis. Bauer used it as their premium inline skate chassis for their Vapor line of skates.
In 2002, Smarthockey published 3 skills development and conditioning training guides. Each guide came with a DVD that had videos for over 260 skills development drills along with a 60-day program that outlined exactly which drills to work on each day. The drills were derived from Soviet and Scandinavian progression training systems and featured a player using an inline skate chassis and using one of the first prototypes of the Smarthockey Training Ball.
In 2017, after years of requests, we introduced our first hockey training pucks. It took us over 3 years and 30 prototypes to finally engineer a puck that met our standards.
The goal was build a puck that worked as well as our ball and was just as durable. The Smarthockey Training Puck has patented "Stay Flat" core technology and is the only puck durable enough for stickhandling and shooting.
This is the first of many products Smarthockey will be introducing in the coming year, so stay tuned.
