Surf and SunSPF ratings are significantly decreased if you don’t apply enough!!! To achieve the Sun Protection Factor (SPF, which protects against the sun’s UVB radiation) reflected on a bottle of sunscreen, you should use approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. ,,, So what does that mean….it means applying the equivalent of a shot glass (2-3 tablespoons) of sunscreen to the exposed areas of the face and body – a nickel-sized dollop to the face alone. Also remember, no matter how much sunscreen you apply, the SPF should be 15 or higher for adequate protection – and ideally 30 or higher for extended time spent outdoors. |
Oxybenzone and Octinoxate
Here’s the thing: Oxybenzone and octinoxate are super-common sunscreen ingredients that are found in 3,500 products, according to NPR. They pop up in sunscreens as well as many moisturizers and makeup that contains SPF.
The only way to know if your sunscreen is reef-safe is to read the listed ingredients. Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreens with the term "non-nano" on the label. Some also specifically say "reef-safe," although it's a safer bet to just look for the ingredients yourself to be sure.

His passion in part comes from a long line of tropical water and sun enthusiasts.
