What Makes Foil Stamping So Special?
This traditional style of letterpress is coming back in a big way!
How does it work? Rolls of metallic paper called gold leaf are applied to the desired material in layers using a combination of heat & pressure. The result is beautiful & adds a touch of charm to any Artwork!
With the use of dies, carved metal plates & foil in place of ink and printing plates, this dry process takes a little longer than most modern techniques. But because the finished product showcases a breathtaking design, we believe it’s worth the extra effort!
While it’s seen a recent rise in popularity, foil stamping is not a new process. It evolved from ancient Egypt where hammers were used to beat gold into thin sheets. These sheets were then used to embellish sacred objects.
At the start of the 19th century, printers began fixing gold onto rolls of paper, transforming them into rolls of gold. Gold foil was eventually introduced in the 20th century, paving the way for the process of foil stamping as we know it today.
