History Of Ikat Fabric

Origin:

Ikat is an ancient weaving technique that has its origins in different cultures across the globe such as South Asia, South America & West Africa.

The term "ikat" has Indonesian origin, and it was introduced into European textile back in early 20th century, when the Dutch scholars begin to study the rich textile traditions of East Indies archipelago (today Indonesia)

Techniques:

Ikat fabrics are woven using an intricate and complex method of resist dyeing where the yarns are first dyed and then woven into a fabric to create feathery and blurry patterns. The technique used to weave this fabric demands a lot of precision from the weaver to align the dyed yarns that will form the pattern.

Unlike printed patterns which are created on a woven fabric surface, the Ikat patterns are woven into the body of the fabric by dyeing the yarns used to weave the fabric giving the patterns a distinct blurry pattern.
