Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter and among the most famous and influential figures in Western art History. In just over a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by Vincent’s signature bold color choices and dramatic, expressive, impasto brushwork. Though his art would lay the foundations of modern art, Vincent was not commercially successful, and his suicide at 37 came after years of mental illness and poverty. Though he suffered greatly in his lifetime, Vincent always wished to capture the beauty and love he saw in the world through painting, which he expressed extensively in his letters to his brother. It gave him hope until his last days and is apparent in the brilliant body of work he left behind. He dedicated his life to art and wanted to simply love and show the world how he felt.
We invite Van Gogh fans, art lovers, and home decorators alike to browse our collection of swirling clouds in every shade of the sky, summer nights filled with stars seen from the window of an asylum, and freshly picked flowers blazing with sunlight and joy. Immerse yourself in the scenic fields of amber grain in southern France and meet the tattered strangers who modeled for this starving artist, not knowing their portraits will now be admired in museums worldwide.

In this category, you will find Van Gogh's most famous paintings -- the iconic paintings that are 'must-sees' in museums, the paintings that get mentioned in popular culture, and the paintings that have arguably touched the most souls world-wide. Most of these paintings were done at the height of his artistic maturity and prowess, and symbolize important moments of his life. These paintings are the most popular with our customers, either through sentimental or decorative value or both!
Vertical Orientation: Roses, Red Poppies and Daisies, Three Sunflowers, Church at Auvers, Skull of Skeleton With Burning Cigarette, Vase with Twelve Sunflowers, Cafe Terrace at Night, Sunflowers, Irises in Vase
Horizontal Orientation: Almond Blossoms, Bedroom in Arles, Field with Poppies, First Steps, Irises in Vase 1890, Irises, Mulberry Tree, Noon Rest After Work, Saint Marys of the Sea, Seascape Near Saint Marys of the Sea, Sower at Sunset, Starry Night Over the Rhone, The Harvest, The Night Cafe, The Red Vineyard, and of course The Starry Night. Arguably the most famous Van Gogh painting of them all, 'The Starry Night' was painted from the window of St. Remy de Provence asylum in which Vincent committed himself to after a severe mental breakdown in December the prior year, during which he infamously self-mutilated his left ear. Painting while confined to the asylum brought Vincent much needed happiness, with no way of knowing that 'The Starry Night' now draws millions of visitors yearly to the Modern Museum of Art in New York.
Cafe Terrace at Night
This is the first painting in which Vincent used starry backgrounds, his latter ones being 'Starry Night Over the Rhone' and 'The Starry Night.' (all of which are in our 'Fan Favorites Category.) The constellations are depicted with such fidelity to be able to precisely date the creation of the painting to 16-17 September 1888. This highly symbolic painting is said to be a parallel to the Last Supper.
Almond Blossoms
Flowering trees were special to van Gogh. They represented awakening and hope. This special painting was made in 1890 as a gift to celebrate the birth of Vincent's nephew. His brother and sister-in-law, Theo and Jo, named the baby after Vincent. It is largely due to Jo’s efforts in publishing the extensive letters Theo and Vincent exchanged that spread knowledge of Vincent's artwork and story across Europe and eventually the whole world.
The Red Vineyard
Depicting workers in a vineyard, this painting is noteworthy as it is believed to be the only painting Van Gogh has ever sold in his lifetime. It was sold for 400 Francs (equal to about 2,000USD today) to Anna Boch, an impressionist painter. She is the sister of Eugene Boch, who had sat for a portrait with Van Gogh.
Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette
An early work by Van Gogh, this was most likely painted in the winter of 1885–86 as a satirical comment on conservative academic practices. Before it was common to use live humans as models, the academic routine included the study of skeletons to develop an understanding of human anatomy. Van Gogh was in Antwerp, Belgium at that time attending classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, which he later said were boring and taught him nothing.
