The Story of Sogo

Our name comes from Dan's years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali, West Africa. "Sogo" means meat in Bambara, the language used in his daily life. The Sogo Snacks logo features a baobab tree, the leaves of which provide Malians relief from the hot sun and sustenance for the sauce in their staple meal, To.

Dan's two plus years in Mali as a Small Enterprise Development Volunteer was transformational. Afterwards, Dan decided that he wanted to live his life devoted to simple living and doing good. In the meantime, Liza joined AmeriCorps, maintaining trails for the Montana Conservation Corps—then spent several months visiting Dan in Mali.

After working with in the grass-fed beef industry, Dan’s desire to create a business with lasting value guided him to take a leap of faith to start Sogo Snacks with his family. Sogo Snacks operates in beautiful Decorah, Iowa, pop. 8,000. Surrounded by bluffs and farmland, we’re a hotspot of healthy food production, simple living...and Toppling Goliath:)
