Hand-crafted pair of hummingbirds by Peterson Remy of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti. Create your own vignette by hanging them together or individually above a flowerbed, pictures of flowers, a vase full of flowers, or anywhere else your imagination leads you.
And speaking of hanging them...
A hole near the tip of the upper wing makes hanging these hummers a breeze. To change the angle of their flight, you can tuck a small finishing nail in the little notch between the feet and tail. The nails will disappear into the piece. A nice feature of these hummers is their hand-riveted front wing. Don't be afraid to bend it out and really take advantage of the 3-D effect.
Traditional Haitian metal sculptures are produced through a very labor-intensive process.
Hatian metal art is traditionally made from old, cast-off oil barrels. The barrels are cleaned, flattened, and sanded down by laborers. Depending on how vigorously the metal is sanded, finished pieces can range in color from rustic brown tones to deep silver.
With the metal thus prepared, the artist takes over. First, he visualizes his design, often taking inspiration from his culture and natural surroundings. Next he chalks it out and then begins the heavy work of hand cutting the metal using only a hammer and chisel, the sculpture is given form. Finally, the metal is coated with weather-proof enamel. The result is a unique piece of folk art, perfect for home or garden use.
