Ikat Matelassé Bedding by Europa Fine Linens

Europa Fine Linens is famous for its luxury matelassé bedding made in Portugal.

The 19th century French invention of the mechanical jacquard loom by Joseph Marie Jacquard enabled matelassé fabric to become commercially viable on a wide scale. Prior to Jacquard’s invention weaving intricate geometric designs was very labor intensive, requiring two people to operate each loom. With the new mechanical Jacquard loom the speed of the weaving was greatly increased and one person could operate several looms simultaneously.

Matelassé fabrics are said to bring a European style to homes which contain products made by the special Jacquard weaving process. These matelassé items are similar to the hand-stitched quilts made popular in France during the 17th century.

Today matelassé fabric is woven on sophisticated computerized air jet Jacquard looms. The weaving process is powered by air which enables the loom to weave even more intricate designs, at incredible high speed. It is a heavy, thick textile that appears to be padded, but actually has no padding within the fabric.

The Ikat line by Europa Fine Linens consists of a modern ikat design combining old world style and modern sophistication.Traditional ikat is a dyeing technique using bound yarns to create a pattern, and then dyed and unbound. Europa Fine Linens Ikat matelassé fabrics are woven on jacquard looms in Portugal using high quality materials.

What is Matelassé (mat-la-SAY)?

The term matelassé is used to describe a type of bedding that's known for being thick and soft with a decorative texture. Matelassé is typically made from a double layer of 100% cotton cloth. It is luxurious yet easy to care for since it's made from cotton. From a decorative standpoint matelassé easily adapts to almost any style from casual to formal, while a complete matelassé ensemble creates a more elegant look.

Specialty looms are used to produce matelassé cotton give the fabric a unique appearance of intricate designs. Even though they are not quilted, matelassé fabrics are made to have raised patterns, indentations and the padded look often associated with quilts. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched quilts made in Marseilles, France.

Coverlet or Bedspread?

coverlet is a lightweight, non-reversible bedspread that is usually either quilted or woven. Classically designed as a decorative layer to go over thicker bedspreads, coverlets often have a thin layer of batting, making them appropriate for use as a stand-alone bed covering, depending on the weight.

These coverlets do not drop all the way to the floor, but the bedspreads do.
When it comes to bedspreads, think traditional. A bedspread is a single, complete piece that extends all the way to the ground. Bedspreads are usually thought of as more old-fashioned than coverlets. Bedspreads are typically intended for an elegant, traditional bedroom.

Shams

  • Standard Shams 20" by 26"
What is a pillow sham?

A sham is a decorative pillow case that transforms normal sized pillow fills into useful accessories for one's bedding set.

While shams can certainly be slept on as normal pillowcases, they are usually used as support when sitting in bed and as decoration during the day.

  • King Shams 20" by 36"

The term "pillow sham" means a pillow with a "false front", stemming from the notion of "a trick". In the 1700's, specially made pillowcases were made to create decorative pillows with removable covers. These "false front" pillow covers became known as pillow shams!

Unlike throw pillows, cotton shams can be easily removed from their fills to be washed or replaced.

  • Euro Shams 26" by 26"
A euro sham pillow (also called a euro pillow) is a square pillow. They are normally used decoratively on beds, and are usually placed behind standard, queen, and/or king sized pillows.

They also make great back support while reading or watching TV in bed.
