The age-old practice of swaddling has been used worldwide in the care of babies. It helps infants feel secure and safe and promotes better sleep. Wrapping baby in a swaddle blanket recreates the feeling of mother’s womb, and in many cases, works like magic to comfort and calm a crying newborn.

When swaddling safely and correctly, you should be able to fit two or three fingers between the swaddle and your baby to make sure it is not too tight. Always place your baby on his back while swaddled.

Swaddling 101

• · Lay your square swaddle blanket across a flat surface in a diamond position, then fold the top corner down toward the center.
• · Place your little one face-up on the blanket, so his shoulders are just below the folded edge. Gently hold his right arm straight down along his side.
• · Pull that corner of the blanket tightly across his body, tucking it beneath the left side of his body. Do not cover his other arm.
• · Pull the bottom corner of the blanket and lift it up over his legs and left arm, tucking the end underneath his left shoulder. Make sure baby’s legs and feet can move freely.
• · Gently straighten the left arm. Wrap the remaining corner of the swaddle snuggly across his body, tucking the end into the blanket behind him.
