pedag was founded by Hartmut Schelchen, who established his reputation by making high quality insoles, orhtotics, shoe care products and shoe trees. In 1975, the company's original brand name HS Schuhbedarf was changed to pedag Intl. "pedag" is derived from the Latin word pedes, meaning foot.

pedag products are hand made in Germany from natural materials, such as cotton, bamboo, leather, cork, silver ion, wool and shearling. During a rigorous quality hand making process only water-based skin friendly adhesives are used. Leathers are vegetable tanned and no solvents are applied.
