Fine Fescue Grass Seed Blend

Fine fescue include various cool-season bunch and sod-forming species that can be used in water-wise lawns. Though fine differ in appearance, fine fescue is often blended together as well as seeded alone. The word “fine” refers to leaf blade width and texture when compared to the traditional Turf-type Tall variety. Fine fescue lawns are an excellent choice for heavily shaded areas, especially dry shaded areas receiving moderate foot-traffic. They tolerate poor soils (and thus need little, if any, fertilizer), are water-wise, and stay green longer into the season than many other common lawn grass.

Fine fescue is also sometimes used for non-traditional, un-mowed (or infrequently-mowed) naturalized lawns, to create a rugged, wild “meadow” look. All of the fine fescues tolerate very cold temperatures, making them excellent for northern latitudes and high elevation yards.

This mix combines four low-growing fine fescues including hard, sheep, chewings and creeping red varieties. Together these grasses take less water and are more shade tolerant than traditional home lawns. They are also highly adaptable to poor soil conditions and need little fertilizer. Fine fescue grass seed thrives in cooler climates and tolerates very low temperatures. This makes it perfect for use in the northern states from northern California stretching east all the way to Illinois and New York.

PREPARE SEEDBED Rake the area to remove dead plant matter, rocks, and other debris. Use a roller to firm up the soil if needed. You should not be leaving a footprint deeper than one inch.	SPREAD SEED Use a hand-held or push-style broadcast spreader to sow the seed uniformly over the soil. Consult the manufacturer of your spreader model to determine the correct setting for your spreader.	SEED-TO-SOIL CONTACT After spreading the seed, use a landscaping rake to lightly work the seed into the soil to a depth of 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. It’s normal for some seed to remain on the soil surface.	CONSTANT MOISTURE Keep the area constantly moist during the germination period. Soil should remain damp, but not soaked for 15-30 days after planting.
