Why do patients have post-surgical drains?
Following a mastectomy or other breast surgery, women are often discharged with drains coming from their surgical site. While these drains are uncomfortable and inconvenient, they promote healing and recovery by preventing blood and lymphatic build-up under the skin. Drains can be in place for one, two or even six weeks, during which time patients must empty and measure the fluid volume in the drain bulbs.
