Solemates are heel protectors that protect stilettos from sinking into grass or becoming damaged from bricks, cobblestones, bricks or other unsupportive surfaces. Solemates' patented design and utility work by gradually increasing the surface area on the bottom of the heel to dissipate the pressure.

We love high heels but we hated walking in them. Every time we walked down a city street, we stumbled on cracks in the sidewalk, cobblestones, bricks, and even wooden decks. The agony of attending bucolic grassy weddings, parties, or graduations was another ordeal which we loathed. Our heels were always getting scratched, scuffed or grass stained. We were feeling at worst at the times when we should have been having the most fun. When we realized there was no solution to this problem, we set out to invent it ourselves.

Solemates prevent heels from sinking into the grass. They work by increasing the surface area on the bottom of the heel to dissipate the pressure. In grass, they are virtually invisible.

We suggest customers start with the Classic and size up or down depending on how the heel protector fits their shoe. The product should be snug on the shoe and should not twist around the heel. We suggest having your shoes on and sitting down when putting the product on for the first time.

Frustrated by the problem and tired of ruining our heels, we set out to create a solution. Though our backgrounds were in financial services, we decided to take a leap and become inventors, marketers, and sales people. There a not a lot of women in engineering, manufacturing or supply chain management, but there are not a lot of women in financial services, either. We never considered ourselves at a disadvantage there, so we never considered it as a hurdle as entrepreneurs, either. While we have certainly faced lots of challenges, disappointments, and setbacks, they have been outmatched with tenacity, confidence, and an unwavering belief in what we are doing.

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

After years of ruining our high heels at weddings, we decided to do something about it. The initial idea struck Becca at her high school prom. It was her first time wearing high heels and as she stumbled and sank into the grass in an attempt to take photos, she thought to herself, "there must be a better way." A decade later, we were sitting next to each other in graduate school at Columbia University. We each needed business plans to create for a class and Becca turned to me and shared her idea. Immediately, I thought about the condition of the heels in my closet (and likely whatever I was wearing that day) and how they were all chewed up and grass stained. I loved the idea of being able to protect my own heels and thought, if I would buy it, maybe other people would too.

What makes your product special?

As the expression goes, necessity is the mother of all invention. We had a problem and so we created a simple but effective solution. Our product is patented and the patent has a lot to do with the function of our elegant design. The hourglass shape of our product is among the reasons it works so well and is as optically appealing as it is. The proprietary material that we source to create our product is also an important factor. It's flexible, crystal clear, and incredibly strong.

What has been the best part of your experience?

Being entrepreneurs is scary but fun. Having invented a product that is helping so many women have better experiences in their high heeled shoes is pretty cool. There was no such thing as a "Heel Protector" when we wrote the business plan in graduate school. For years, when we told people what we did, they looked at us as though we were crazy. As we have slowly, but with certainty, grown our idea into a business and into a brand, we look back with pride and gratitude on what we have accomplished and with excitement for what lies ahead.
