Why Vegetable-tanned Leather?
You may not be aware of the fact that most leather is tanned in large industrial tanneries using chromium. Tanning using chromium is actually very environmentally unfriendly and produces a leather that lacks much of the natural elegance that older leather goods display. Vegetable-tanned leather is produced in small batches by dedicated artisans using natural vegetable tannin and produces comparatively little pollution while allowing the leather to maintain its natural durability. Vegetable-tanned leathers have an extremely supple texture with a rich luster and naturally age with use. Basically, they develop a patina in accordance with how they are used. This patina lends products a strikingly unique appearance that increases with use, making each piece a unique collector’s item.
