The Smarthockey MAXX Ball

The Smarthockey Story: Making Hockey Players Better

Smarthockey was started with one goal in mind - make US and Canadian hockey players better by developing products and training programs that let players train anywhere, anytime.

As former players, we trained with world renowned hockey instructors like Dr. Yasha Smushkin, Laura Stamm, and Real Turcotte, but we always wished we had a way to practice what we learned after the camps were done.

After our playing days were over, we started running our own camp and realized that our students only got better when they were on the ice with us because they didn't have a viable way of training when they were at home.

So in 2001, we introduced the Smarthockey Training Ball so our students could work on their stickhandling, shooting and passing skills at home or before games and practices.

Apparently, we weren't the only ones that thought the balls were a good idea.  In less than 12 months our balls were being sold in over 500 hundred hockey pro shops across the US, Canada, Sweden, Russia, Japan, UK and even Australia.

Believe it or not, in 2014, the Smarthockey MAXX was the first and only weighted hockey training ball on the market.

Our goal was to make a ball that felt like it was twice as heavy as an ice hockey puck, so players could strengthen their wrists and forearms while they worked on their stickhandling, shooting and passing.

There’s actually a lot of technology in the Smarthockey MAXX - enough that we received a patent. The core of the MAXX is a solid stainless steel ball bearing. The bearing adds the weight.  We could have stopped there and sold just the ball bearing, but instead, we chose to use the same Surlyn outer shell that we use on our Original Training Ball and Puck so the MAXX would roll smoothly, have the dead feel of an ice hockey puck and be “slapshot” proof.

So, if your goal is to build stronger wrists and forearms for a harder shot and more puck control, shoot the MAXX 100 times and stickhandle for 15 minutes every night and you’ll be on your way!

Our History

Smarthockey C|SAW Chassis was designed in 1997.  The chassis was engineered to duplicate ice skate blade contact percentages and body ramp angles of a "rockered" ice hockey skate blade.

The chassis was licensed to Bauer Nike Hockey in 1997 and the name was changed to the TUUK Rocker Chassis.  Bauer used it as their premium inline skate chassis for their Vapor line of skates.

The first Smarthockey Training Ball prototypes were white.  They had 3 holes on each side because we didn't have the money to pay for a tool which would "pull" the pins during the molding process.  We made 1000 prototypes in the first run and started selling the balls at the Hockey Stop in Columbus, OH. The balls were sold  in an old Nike shoe box with an 8"x11" flyer explaining the what the ball was and how it was different from orange Street Hockey balls.

Our goal was to sell the first 1,000 prototypes, so we could pay for a tool that wouldn't leave any holes, but then a funny thing happened - people and pro shops started calling, asking if we were the ones selling "the ball with the holes in it"?

We kept the holes and the rest is history.

In 2017, after years of requests, we introduced our first hockey training pucks.  It took us over 3 years and 30 prototypes to finally engineer a puck that met our standards.

The goal was build a puck that worked as well as our ball and was just as durable.  The Smarthockey Training Puck has patented "Stay Flat" core technology and is the only puck durable enough for stickhandling and shooting.

This is the first of many products Smarthockey will be introducing in the coming year, so stay tuned.

Smarthockey Training Balls are the #1 off-ice training balls in the world. They are used by top pro, collegiate and junior players across North America and Europe as an essential part of their off-ice skills development. The Smarthockey MAXX Stickhandling & Shooting Ball helps players build stronger forearms and hands for a harder more accurate shot. At just over 8 oz (228 g), the MAXX is almost double the weight of the Smarthockey ORIGINAL and feels twice as heavy as an ice hockey puck. The patented MAXX 2-piece ball technology combines an ultra durable Surlyn shell with a steel core. The solid core covered by a Surlyn shell eliminates any pliancy or "smushing" of the ball between the stick and the training surface. The diameter of the ball is 2.18" making the height at which it contacts the stick 1.09" which is less than one tenth of an inch higher than an ice hockey puck. The added weight combined with the roll and contact height of the MAXX ball strengthens a player's wrists simply by stickhandling and shooting it. Warm up before games and practices or train in your garage, basement, on a tennis court, basketball court, paved street or driveway. As the name suggests, it's the only ball players can use for stickhandling, shooting and passing drills.
