kampMATE was born out of the mind of our late father. Nearly 40 years ago our dad designed and manufactured the first WoodFlame wood burning stove. It was the first of its kind and it quickly gained traction durning that time when open camp fires were not allowed in the wilderness and backcountry. The stove design and utility function were patented and so began the life of the WoodFlame Stove. Nearly all the stove designs today are still patterned off his original design.

As the patent was expiring we decided to retool and create a new version of a backpacking stove and patent it for the modern backpacker. This stove called the Folding Firebox is truly the Swiss Army Knife to backpacking stoves. After selling our interest in that company years ago we decided to re-enter the market with a stove that is closer to the original WoodFlame stove in both size and design but with a few upgrades. So today nearly 40 years later we have the modern version of the WoodFlame Stove that is sturdy, lightweight and extremely functional at a very low cost.

Keeping with the same basic principles of the original WoodFlame Stove we've improved the ease of assembly, re-enforced the side plates with some embossing, created larger air ventilation on the sides and bottom tray and added some cross bars to the top to accommodate smaller cups and pots.

Still foldable but now even thinner

One of the best parts of the stove was that it folded flat. We've improved on that design and made it even thinner. You couldn't tell it was in your pack before and now you will need to double check to make sure you have it in there with it being so thin! Each stove comes with its own nylon carry case as well to keep if safely in one place and to keep your other gear from getting dirty after each use. We do recommend wiping each plate off in the dirt of grass prior to putting back into the nylon case. It's amazing what a little dirt will do to clean the stove after each use.

Can't even remember how many backpacking trips I've taken this stove on. I was 7 years old in this picture and I distinctively remember complaining about how heavy my backpack was. It certainly wasn't because of my WoodFlame Stove!

Still backpacking and camping after 30 years

We are still avid backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts after 30 years. Although our father is no longer here with us to go and enjoy the outdoors he truly instilled in us a lifetime love for the outdoors. We may never be as good of fisherman as he was but we are happy to carry on the legacy that he started. We hold you too will enjoy his invention of the WoodFlame Stove.
