The Gore-Tex Membrane

The heart piece of all Gore-Tex garments is an extremely thin, constantly waterproof, breathable and windproof membrane. It contains over 1.4 billion micro pores per square centimetre. The microscopically small pores are about 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water. This way the Gore-Tex membrane is absolutely waterproof. The pores of the Gore-Tex membrane are 700 times bigger than a water vapour molecule. Thanks to this, perspiration can escape unhindered, ensuring breathability. Furthermore, the membrane is absolutely windproof which prevents hypothermia.

The Gore-Tex Laminate

To be able to use the Gore-Tex membrane in an end product, it first needs to be firmly connected to a high performance inner layer and the outer layer. This combination of the membrane and carrier materials is called a laminate. To make the finished product truly waterproof it needs to have sealed seams. Every stitch in a seam poses a potential breach risk. This is why we use Gore-Seam tape for maximal water proofness. Every seam in garments, shoes and gloves with Gore-Tex laminates is sealed with a Gore patented machine by specially trained manufacturers in factories.

Quality assurance

Starting with the base material we conduct a series of tests in our own laboratories to be sure that all materials meet our high bar. Subsequently the products are tested under real conditions and in permanent dialogue with our athletes to improve them into the smallest detail.
