2lbs Fresh Spanish Moss, Live Spanish Moss, Live air Plant
  • The Live Spanish moss doesn’t draw these nutrients from the trees through their roots but will absorb these minerals with its trichrome when it rains. When caring for Spanish Moss at home a good soaking in rain water once a week usually does the trick. I like to soak mine with a mister so it doesn’t break up while being removed from its bath.
  • Live Spanish moss is a very small bromeliad (Tillandsia usneoides) that lives in the branches and bark of trees.

  • Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is an epiphytic flowering plant that often grows upon larger trees in tropical and subtropical climates, native to much of Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Central America, South America, the Southern United States, the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, West Indies and is also naturalized in Queensland (Australia). It is known as "grandpas beard" in French Polynesia. In the United States from where it is most known, it is commonly found on the southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) and bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) in the lowlands, swamps, and savannas of the southeastern United States from central Delaware to Florida and west to Texas and southern Arkansas.
  • Spanish moss is a superb air plant that grows in long silverish festoons, hanging from tree limbs. Spanish moss can grow strands up to 20 feet long especially on Live Oak and Cypress tree branches. As an epiphyte, an air plant that lives upon other plants, it absorbs nutrients and water from the air and rainfall. It is not a biological parasite in the same sense as some other epiphytes that sap nutrients from the tree.
  • The plant prefers shady warm areas. Direct sun will dry it out. The plant likes humidity. The plant does not derive any nutrients from the host tree. The only damage it can cause is if the colony gets so large that it either blocks the sun/air from the limb, or the colony gets so heavy the weight breaks the limb, especially after a heavy rain/wind event.
  • The plant has no roots but derives its nutrients from rainfall, detritus and airborne dust. The stems and leaves are covered with overlapping silver-green-gray scales, which are important for absorbing water and trapping dust and nutrient particles. The very narrow, linear, awl-shaped leaves (1 to 3 inches long) are whitish-green-gray.
