HASPEL - Seersucker Suits Since 1909

Joseph Haspel Sr. was the first to recognize the power of the pucker. He founded his eponymous brand in 1909 with the goal of creating clothes that could stand up to his native New Orleans heat. He knew that the Brits used this strangely puckered cloth called seersucker in India and thought it could translate well from a laborer’s outfit to a hot-weather-ready suit.

He was right, the world agreed and quickly Haspel became synonymous with summertime soigné and the jazz hot, cayenne kick of the Crescent City style. Yankee prepsters at Princeton weren’t far behind, snapping up this "It Suit" and spreading it through the Ivy League as a signifier of a true gentlemen. Lawn parties ensued. Joseph Sr. was keeping it real down south. In one famed story, he dove into the ocean with his clothes on just to show his friends how good his wash-and-wear suit would still look at that evening’s cocktails. Joseph didn’t merely create a brand; he set a standard for making clothes that never get in the way of a good time.

Steamy Beginnings

For Laurie Haspel’s great-grandfather, Joseph Haspel, Sr., inspiration to create the iconic suit came from his time spent in New Orleans factories before the advent of air conditioning. In an effort to stay cool, factory workers were wearing lightweight overalls made of a fabric called seersucker. Haspel saw this and felt that the breathable fabric could be elevated into a dressy ensemble, appropriate for the boardroom, a restaurant or anywhere else a jacket was required.

Clothing Made For A Good Time

Transforming seersucker from work to play over 110 years ago was our crowning achievement. The Ivy League followed, Hollywood followed, and a nation followed long before we actually counted "followers". It's our anthem and it plays as well today as it did in New Orleans music halls back in 1909. The original seersucker suit. Enjoy.

HOW TO WEAR SEERSUCKER:

Make sure you find the right size. Since seersucker has volume, you should choose a suit that’s tailored, and fits well.
The hem of your pants should be ankle length.
Seersucker shorts should look casual and comfortable, rather than stiff.
If you’re wearing a seersucker suit for your wedding, consider one without the traditional blue and white stripes. The puckered fabric is available in tonal blues and even black.
For a casual look, wear your seersucker suit over a simple T-shirt. If you’re headed to a dressy affair, go for a crisp white shirt and a tie with texture. But don’t wear a seersucker tie.
