What is a retrofit downlight?

Retrofit LEDs are replacement bulbs or downlights that fit into existing recessed light fixtures like cans. They typically replace outdated traditional bulbs so you can keep your existing recessed can in place – and not have to rewire the whole ceiling – when switching to LED. Some retrofits include a TP24 connector for power and others feature both a TP24 connector and an E26 adapter so you can power the retrofit downlight in cans that accept E26 bulbs. How do I secure this LED retrofit downlight to an existing can?

Our LED downlight products include an installation guide to help you with the install process. In general, retrofit LED downlights secure to a can via spring connectors that clip into existing holes in the can. Simply attach the downlight spring clips to the interior of the can. Allow the clips to pull the LED trim up to the fixture. Push gently until the outer edge is flush with the ceiling.

How about connecting the wires on an LED recessed downlight?

Regarding the wiring, it is highly recommended a licensed electrician install your fixture to meet electrical codes. This downlight includes an easily installed way to insert an LED into an existing, pre-wired recessed can. Simply attach the included E26 adapter to an existing can that accepts an E26 light bulb base. If your existing can only has a TP24 connector, then you can use the included TP24 connector to power the light that way.

What does Baffle and Smooth mean in your product titles?

Baffle and smooth refer to the trim style for our downlights and dimmable recessed light fixtures. Smooth trim is suitable for a streamlined, modern look. It maximizes beam spread due to its reflective nature. Baffle trim features uniformed grooves close to the light source to minimize glare and create a soft light.

Why is moisture rating important and what does Damp Rated mean?

The term damp rated in our product descriptions and technical specifications refer to moisture ratings. Safety should be the main focus when you choose damp rated light bulbs. Since water is a conductor you want to eliminate accidental electrocution to protect the people who install and use light fixtures, including your family, visitors, and clients. Damp rating refers to moist locations with no direct exposure to water. Damp environments include kitchens, bathrooms (not in shower or tub), basements, and some saunas. Anywhere steamy or humid air exists, even a laundry room, could be defined as a damp environment. You can use damp rated lights outside, too, so long as they are in covered and protected locations where rain or other water runoff does not come into direct contact with the light fixture. For example, you can use damp rated Sunco LEDs in covered porches where the lighting fixture is out of the rain and on deck overhangs where no water seeps through to the light. Of course, you would not want to use a damp rated light in your garden as an uplight or on the wall of an exterior pool shower where direct contact with water occurs. Sunco indicates the moisture rating in our technical specifications so you know our products meet set standards. What are warm lights or cool lights? What about color temperature?

Color temperatures are measured in degrees of Kelvin (K) on a scale from 1,000 to 10,000. This measurement allows you to describe the quality of a light. Commercial and residential lighting applications typically use from 2000K to 65000K color temperatures. Lower color temperatures offer a warmer look. They are more amber, yellow, or a warm white. High color temperatures offer a cooler look. They range from white to blue to blueish silver. Light can help create a mood or define room ambiance. You can recognize color temperatures in the world around you once you have a general understanding of them. Here are some basics to help with that: Candlelight - 2200K, Morning Sun – 2000K to 3000K, Middday (noon to 1p.m.) or Daylight - 5000K to 6000K, Evening Sun – less than 2000K

Are Sunco Retrofit Downlight LEDs recyclable?

Yes! Sunco LED Retrofit Downlights and our Sunco LED bulbs are recyclable. Sunco LED lights do NOT contain mercury, unlike CFL bulbs or other traditional incandescent bulbs might. Our light bulbs contain recyclable components so you should be able to recycle them with your curbside recycling service or solid waste management company. Also note that Sunco packaging is fully recyclable and the cardboard shipping boxes are reusable as well as recyclable.
