WHAT IS A BULLY STICK? Dog chews made from baked pizzles. "Pizzle" is an old German name for a bovine male organ. Bully sticks are only one ingredient: smooth muscle tissue. They are not bones or tendons. Please consider this in your expectation of how long they should last. A "steer" is a bull that has been fixed. A "bull" is a male that is still in tact. Steer sticks are still bully sticks, but less testosterone makes them less dense. So steers typically have less moisture and can turn out crunchy if the pizzle is really thin. Sticks with less moisture are actually easier to digest. Thus steers are great for older dogs, puppies and dogs with sensitive stomachs. Bull pizzle is better for dogs that are serious chewers.

OUR ASSURANCE OF IMPERFECTION: Perfect chews are made uniform by processing with artificial colors, fillers, then punching out of machines like hot dogs. Because our bully sticks are made by Mother Nature and hand-trimmed by humans, they will never be the same. Size, aroma and color of every stick will vary, just as bulls and steers do in nature. The photo you see is a general guide. You will be disappointed if you expect our sticks to be the same every time you order. This is not a lack of quality control. It is our refusal to manipulate a product that is 100% natural. We do grade sticks into weight ranges so you do not get extreme size differences from batch to batch. Some manufacturers puff out sticks during cooking process to create the illusion of a thick stick. But if weighs like a standard, it's going to chew like a standard. Thus, we go by weight. It is a better measure of longevity than circumference.

WHY SO EXPENSIVE COMPARED TO OTHER CHEWS? Bones and tendons are plentiful on both both male and female bovines. Bully sticks, however, can only come from pizzles. Pizzles are only found on males. Dog chew manufacturers have to compete with thousands of restaurants all over the world who buy beef pizzle to put in soups. To make things more challenging, bully sticks thicker than a pencil can only come from males that are bulls. Most ranches only have one bull per herd for safety reasons. This makes true bull pizzles a very rare commodity. Once harvested, pizzles have to be baked at a very low temperature for several days, then cut into sections. Thus, your pup is getting a chew that is one of the most unique, sought after sources of protein on the market!

WHAT IS YOUR GOAL? We offer a variety of different sizes to choose from. If you are just wanting to clean your dog's teeth, 6" Standards are fine. However, if you are wanting to keep a 50 LB dog busy while you eat dinner, a 12" Thick bully would be more appropriate.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE OUR BULLY STICKS

OUR PRIORITY IS SAFETY: Sancho & Lola are our kids. We know you feel this way about your pups too. Thus, our manufacturers must meet high safety standards. They have USDA, GSFI or BRC certified facilities. Some of our manufacturers have USDA human-grade facilities. Our bully sticks are hand-inspected and made in the USA. Our odor-free Charcuterie Style bully sticks and our Steer sticks are strictly made from pizzles farmed in the USA. In order to have year-round availability of our Traditional bully sticks we need to source pizzles that are farmed in all of North America, not just the USA. This will also help keep our prices reasonable.

LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE: Our founder studied Functional Nutrition for a decade. It opened her eyes to how many national brands contain ingredients that are known to cause inflammation in joints, skin and organs. Artificial flavorings, GMO wheat, corn, soybean oil, carrageenan, synthetic preservatives like BHA and BHT, bone meal (MBM) are all known to cause inflammation and contribute to degenerative diseases.

OUR STORY

sancho and lola

"There is a closet where everything dog-related is kept...treats, shampoo, towels, nail clippers etc go into what we call "Sancho & Lola's Closet."

Howdy. Sancho & Lola, my German Pointers were found in bleak conditions. Since 2015, our little boutique brand from Texas has donated generously to canine rescues. When I adopted Sancho in 2011, it was clear he suffered from severe anxiety. The best thing for anxiety is exercise. The second best thing is a dog chew. I gave him rawhide but they gave him tummy trouble. When I discovered that conventional rawhide is a by-product of the leather industry and made with chemicals, I looked for an alternative. After a disastrous knee surgery, I gave up a 15-year career in the fine wine industry to study Functional Nutrition. I was appalled to learn that the low-fat, high-grain diet suggested to me by doctors in my youth was causing inflammation and contributing to joint pain in my 40's. I was furious to see the main ingredient in most conventional dog treats was grains. Dogs are carnivores. They are not meant to eat genetically modified grains that look nothing like the grains our ancestors grew up with. This is why many people and pets cannot tolerate them.

Customers are loyal to our brand because:

  • They know we are genuine people who love dogs.
  • They trust we will not use marketing gimmicks that insult their intelligence.
  • They relate to our passion for health and wellness through nutrition.
  • Our treats and chews are doggone tasty!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Are bully sticks safe to give puppies? Yes. They will satisfy their need to chew. But introduce slowly to avoid tummy upset. Start with our thinner sizes (like our steer sticks). If your pup tends to inhale treats, start with a 12-inch and remove when it gets down to 2-3 inches.
  • Can bully sticks give my dog loose stools? Yes, just like changing your dog's food can. Some dogs have more sensitive digestive systems than others. Introduce slowly. Try adding canned pumpkin, ground flax seeds or plain yogurt to your pup's diet, which can aid in digestion and firm up stools.
  • My dog has allergies to corn and wheat - do your bully sticks contain any known allergens? No, they are 100% beef - nothing else. As long as your dog can tolerate beef, they should not have any issues related to cheap grains and soy.
  • Are they supposed to have a funky smell? Yes, compliments of Mother Nature. There are many variables to why some batches have more of a smell than others. We do our best to grade out the most offensive ones, but keep in mind, dogs love stinky things. Odor is a small sacrifice to make for your pup's enjoyment. If smell is a deal-breaker for you, order our odor-free bullys or steers.
  • How long will a bully stick last? This will vary from dog to dog. It is important to get the appropriate size stick for the chew power of your dog. This is why we offer many choices. Bully Sticks are not meant to last as long as bones - they are baked tissue.
