PAPER WEIGHT

Be sure to know both the TYPE and WEIGHT of paper before making a purchasing decision.

Did you know that 81 lb. text paper is lighter than 65 lb. cover cardstock?

· Paper WEIGHT in pounds/ lbs. alone does not adequately describe the weight or thickness of paper

· Both the GSM and TYPE of paper are key elements for consideration

· GSM = Grams per Square Meter

· TYPES most common are TEXT and COVER

· TEXT is a thinner, lighter weight paper, similar to copier paper and well-suited for printing projects

· COVER is a thicker, heavier weight paper or "cardstock”; not suited for all home printers

· Other paper types include Bond, Index, and Bristol

· The thickness or “caliper” of cardstock is measured in points using a device called a micrometer
