The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating is used to rank the efficiency of air filters. Every air filter has holes that allow air and particles to pass through. The smaller the holes, the fewer particles that pass through. Higher MERV ratings indicate smaller holes, and therefore a more efficient filter.
There seems to be some general confusion about MERV 16 rating and the relationship with the number of paper folds. MERV rating refers to the actual material used to make the filter for the air to pass through. The material used in Green Label filters has been laboratory tested and is MERV 16 rated.
They will last up to 12 months (in an average home or office) depending on use. Obviously, running the HVAC system 365 days a year, 24 hours a day will reduce the life of the filter. The life of the filter also depends on the air quality in your home or office.
The folds in filters are there to provide rigidity because of different construction methods. The folds have no bearing on the MERV rating. Our paper has wire embedded in it so our filters do not need a large number of folds and the heavier frame. This reduces paper use and waste which is better for the environment. The folds in the filter also slow down airflow and increase noise. This reduces the efficiency of the HVAC system because it must work harder to push the same volume of air through and therefore increases energy costs and noise.
